3Novices:Priest killed in France church hostage taking

PARIS // Two attackers seized hostages in a church near the Normandy city of Rouen on Tuesday, killing one hostage by slitting his throat before being killed by police, a security official said.

A second hostage was in critical condition.

The identities of the attackers and motive for the attack are unclear, according to the security official.

French president Francois Hollande and interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve were on their way to the town of Saint-Etienne-en-Rouvray where the hostage-taking took place, the interior ministry said.

Anti-terrorism investigators have been summoned in the case.

The incident comes as France remains on high alert nearly two weeks after Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel mowed down a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in the southern city of Nice, killing 84 and injuring over 300.

The attack was the third major strike on France in 18 months and was claimed by ISIL.

France is still under a state of emergency and has extra police presence in the wake of the July 14 Nice attack.
