Prime minister Theresa May confirmed that the "terrible incident in London" was being treated as "a potential act of terrorism" and was due to make a public statement after holding emergency ministerial talks later in the day.

Britain's Labour Party and the Scottish National Party have announced a suspension in campaigning for the general election because of the terror attack, joining the Conservative Party in halting campaigning ahead of the June 8 vote.

"Dreadful news from London. My thoughts are with all those affected," said Scottish Nationalist party leader Nicola Sturgeon.
