Istanbul // Russia's ambassador to Ankara was seriously injured in a gun attack in the Turkey's capital on Monday.
Andrey Karlov was shot while while visiting the opening of an art exhibition in Ankara, television reports said.
Mr Karlov was hospitalised and several other people were wounded, the NTV and CNN-Turk TV stations said.
The attack came after days of protests in Turkey over Russia's role in Syria, where it supports the regime of president Bashar Al Assad.
Pictures published by the Hurriyet daily showed at least two men in suits lying flat on the ground as another man brandished a gun.
The attack happened at the Cagdas Sanatlar Merkezi, a major art exhibition hall in the Cankaya district of Ankara where most foreign embassies are located including Russia's mission.
CNN-Turk said the ambassador was in a serious condition.
Protesters in Turkey have held Moscow responsible for human rights violations in Aleppo, although Moscow and Ankara are now working closely together to evacuate citizens from the northern Syrian city.
Russia intervened militarily in Syria's civil war in September last year, launching air strikes against rebel groups fighting to remove Mr Al Assad, some of which are backed by Turkey.
