3Novices:US$10m bonanza for Kim Kardashian's robbers

PARIS // Kim Kardashian freed herself and raised the alarm after being tied up and robbed at gunpoint of US$10 million (Dh36.7m) in jewels in Paris, police sources said on Tuesday.

The multimillionaire US reality TV star, who was in the French capital for Paris fashion week, was robbed at a luxury residence on Monday by five men posing as police officers.

Ms Kardashian was tied up and locked in the bathroom while the robbers helped themselves to a ring worth about US$4.5 million and a case of jewellery worth US$5.6 million. They also stole two mobile phones.

The robbery took place in the chic Madeleine district of Paris, near the city's main department stores.

Investigators initially thought a stylist who was in the building had raised the alarm but police sources said Ms Kardahian, 35, "untied her bonds and phoned her bodyguard, who was not present at the time of the attack".

The bodyguard, Pascal Duvier, was providing security for Ms Kardashian's sister, Kourtney, at a Paris nightclub.

The assailants wore masks and police jackets.

After overpowering the night warden, three of them kept guard while two burst into Kardashian's apartment.

They held a gun to her head, gagged her and bound her hands and feet before bundling her into the bathroom.

There is no CCTV footage of the attack or its aftermath but investigators hope to find DNA traces at the scene.

The mother of two and wife of rap superstar Kanye West flew home to the US on Monday after being questioned by police over the incident, which a spokeswoman said had left her badly shaken.

But not everyone expressed sympathy for her ordeal.

Couturier Karl Lagerfeld said Ms Kardashian was partly to blame for being too flashy.

"She is too public, too public - we have to see in what time we live. You cannot display your wealth, then be surprised that some people want to share it," said the 83-year-old designer after his show for Chanel.

"I don't understand why she was in a hotel with no security. If you are that famous and you put all your jewellery on the internet, you go to hotels where nobody can come near to the room."

Kardashian has been a fixture of US celebrity news for more than a decade, known mainly for the TV show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and a leaked sex tape.

The robbery put a renewed focus on security in France, where tourism has taken a hit following a series of terror attacks.
