3Novices:'Turkish James Bond' to make film of coup

ISTANBUL // A wildly popular Turkish television and film thriller franchise starring an action hero dubbed the "Turkish James Bond" is to make a movie about the failed July 15 coup.

The "Valley of the Wolves" franchise has made dozens of television episodes and several spin-off films since it was first created in 2003. Production company Pana Film announced it was making Valley of the Wolves — Coup "in response to intense public demand".

Though no details were given, the film will most likely pit Turkish secret service action hero Polat Alemdar — played by Necati Sasmaz — against those plotting to unseat President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Like James Bond, Polat Alemdar always prevails against the enemy, be they the mafia, militants, or even the West. Critics have accused the films of being overtly nationalistic, anti-American and even anti-Semitic.

The first film in the franchise was Valley of the Wolves — Iraq, which centred on the capture of 11 Turkish soldiers in the US invasion of Iraq. The next was about the deadly raid by Israeli commandos on a Turkish aid ship bound for Palestine.

However, Valley of the Wolves — Terror, a 2007 series about Turks battling Kurdish militants, was pulled after only one episode.
